Gender & Corruption at Alliance for Integrity’s Global Conference in Mexico

Alliance for Integrity organised a Global Conference on ‘Implementing Business Integrity into Practice – Pathways to Impact’ on 4th April, 2019 at Mexico.

The Alliance for Integrity’s Global Conference aimed to bring together relevant stakeholders from the private sector, the public sector, civil society, academia and international institutions to enable a global exchange of knowledge, experience and good practices. The conference was of relevance to personnel engaged in anti-corruption issues in government, civil society, development agencies, international organisations and academia, to come up with concrete ideas on how can jointly create, measure and visualise impact.

Ms. Shabnam Siddiqui spoke in the panel on ‘Gender and Corruption: Evidence and Impact’. Ms. Siddiqui shared how the discourse of gender is lost in the wider discussion on business integrity. There is still little empirical evidence on how gender is interlinked with corruption, and how it can be leveraged for promoting transparency and accountability. A review of existing studies suggests that women are differently affected by corruption than men and may also respond to it in different ways, informed Ms. Siddiqui. It is time then that strategies for countering gender and corruption get fine tuned.
