Deliberation meeting with Thane Smart City Limited

To ascertain Thane Smart City development thus far, and for developing collaboration between smart city needs and business solutions, Ms. Shabnam Siddiqui, Director and Mr. Somnath Singh, Program Manager, Centre of Excellence for Governance, Ethics and Transparency (CEGET) met the CEO Thane Smart City Ltd. and his team on 26th March 2019 in Thane, Maharashtra.

Ms. Shabnam Siddiqui shared the journey of CEGET and its innovations in Smart Cities and sought alignment of smart city development with Sustainable Development Goals.

Mr. Sameer Unhale, CEO, Thane Smart City shared the major challenges and dream projects of Thane Smart City. He showed interest in developing partnership with CEGET/GCNI and therefore requested Ms. Shabnam to develop formal collaboration with them. Thane is particularly interested in SDG 13 on Climate Action, as Mr. Unhale stressed on the fact that we only have a decade to set things rights.


Ms. Shabnam Siddiqui attended the Chevening High Tea at the residence of Mr. Crispin Simon, British Deputy High Commissioner Mumbai, on 2nd March 2019. The interactions with fellow Chevening alumni was enlightening and discussion with The Rt Hon Mark Field MP, Minister of State for Asia and the Pacific extremely informative about the keen interest and role of UK in India.

CEGET looks forward to working on joint projects with the British High Commission in coming future.

CEGET’s association with NIUA

CEGET /GCNI and National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA) agreed for a partnership to work in the area of promoting the use of data for informed decision making through the pilot of an urban data observatory and map out the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with regard to the business community in India.

Roundtable discussion on creating Impact on Human Rights due diligence

Mr. Somnath Singh participated in the roundtable discussion on Human Rights Due Diligence with the representatives of UNDP, Businesses and legal experts. He interacted with the representatives and shared that Human Rights Due Diligence is an ongoing risk management process that a reasonable and prudent company /business needs to follow in order to identify, prevent, mitigate and account for how it addresses its adverse human rights impacts.

The event was organized and moderated by Global Compact Network, Germany and Twentyfifty on 13th March 2019 in Delhi.

Conversation on urbanization series for Sustainable Development

Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER) organized a conversation on urbanization series for sustainable development in Delhi on 19th March 2019 to discuss about the Role of Resident Welfare Associations in Smart Cities Mission and social development. Mr. Atul Goyal, President, URJA (United Residents Joint Action of Delhi) shared about the kind of projects being implemented by RWAs in Delhi and the challenges being faced by them. Mr. Somnath Singh shared his experience and innovations in promoting governance and transparency in smart cities and businesses and drew the attention of the people towards the importance of citizens engagement in project designing and policy advocacy for sustainable development of cities. He recommended regular capacity building of RWAs and proper monitoring of projects for achieving desirable outcomes.
